I love to make Christmas crafts. It must come from childhood memories of making paper loop garlands, handmade cards, paper plate wreaths, and cranberry strings. It seems that the holidays are always a time for fun crafts and even now that I’m an adult, I want to keep that tradition going.
I’m sure you’ve seen those pretty decorative balls at your local discount store. I think they’re so cute, so I tried my hand at making my own DIY deco balls as a holiday decoration for the top of our buffet. They were fun to make and quite easy.
You can make these balls as plain or as fancy as you like. I went with a little bit of both for mine, and this is what I used: styrofoam craft balls in different sizes, tissue paper, Mod Podge, Scotch® Expressions Tape, Scotch® Brand double-sided tape, star and snowflake shaped brads, acrylic jewels, and craft glue.
How to make the deco balls
What I love about decoupage is that it’s so forgiving. You don’t have to be perfect or a master crafter to create something special. For this craft, cut or rip the tissue paper to your desired size. Remember, this doesn’t have to be perfect. In my opinion, the wrinkles are the best part.
- Turn your tissue print side down
- Attach the tissue to the foam ball with a small piece of Scotch® Brand double-sided tape
- Apply Mod Podge to the tissue
- Cover the foam ball with the tissue, pressing down so the Mod Podge sticks
- Coat the tissue covered ball with Mod Podge and allow to dry
When the Mod Podge is dry it will look shiny instead of white. Once your balls are shiny and no longer tacky, it’s time to decorate them. This is the really fun part because there are no limits. Using the red Scotch® Expressions Tape, I made a stripe down the middle of my ball and cut out circles. Once the tape was applied, I stuck these cute snowflake brads into the foam ball as added decoration.
I made several more balls using the green and silver glitter Scotch® Expressions Tape, acrylic jewels, and some gold star brads. I am so happy with how my DIY deco balls turned out.
For display, I found a cute Santa basket that I filled with my DIY deco balls, some basket filler, and cinnamon pinecones. Not only does my deco ball display look festive, it smells amazing!
To get even more in the holiday spirit, I am displaying my basket of DIY deco balls on some faux evergreen and added some clear Christmas tree lights. I love how it turned out and now my usually boring buffet top is now all decked out for the holidays.
I found everything I needed to make my DIY deco balls in the craft supplies aisle at Walmart. The Scotch® Expressions Tape was was near the paper craft items in my store. The Scotch® Brand double-sided tape was found on display at the end of the gift wrap supplies aisle as well as with office supplies.
