As the days, weeks, and years go by (far too quickly), the little boy that made me a mother is becoming a memory. Now he is the tallest member of our family, is a Senior in high school, and is now starting to think about college and beyond. I don’t know how this happened, but it was way too fast.
Some days I wish I could take some special moments and keep them in a jar. A jar to be opened whenever I want to go back in time to when he was little, if only for a few minutes. Since I can’t go back, I am accepting Yoplait Go Big‘s challenge to write a letter to my (not so) little boy so he knows exactly how awesome I think he is.
On a winter night in December, almost 17 years ago, you made your way into the world. You were a week late, but when you decided it was time, it was time. After a dramatic birth, I was handed the most perfect redheaded, blue-eyed baby boy I had ever seen.
While our early years weren’t always easy, you were my sidekick. My little buddy. It was just you and me against the world and we have had a lot of fun over these 16 years. You have made me smile, you have made me belly laugh, and most of all, you have taught me how to love. I mean, truly love.
You embrace your challenges and instead of feeling sorry for yourself, you excel. I love that about you. You are so smart and many things come easily to you. Don’t ever forget that.
You are a self-described geek and it’s awesome. While I don’t really understand your love of math, science, Pokemon and anime, it’s all part of what makes you, you. You march to your own drummer and amaze me every day with interesting conversations because you get it.
While I may not know where you got your head for math, I do know that you inherited your love of baseball, desire for knowledge, and love of reading from me. I love that now we can share books. Maybe one of these days I will give your Sci-Fi books a chance just as you have with my Stephen King books. See, I told you so!
You are also the best big brother Dub could ask for. He thinks you hung the moon and are the coolest person on Earth. Even with an almost 11 year age difference, I love watching your bond grow. I love that you are both so close even though you’re not close in age.
For all of these things and more, you are amazing and I am happy to be the one you call mom.
I am proud of you every day and I love you. Love, Mom.
