GoGreen Diapers was started a little over a year ago by Leah Leverich Ph.D and her husband Don Cooper Ph.D. They have made quite the name for themselves in the cloth diapering world with their Champ 2.0 and after trying one, it’s very easy to see why! They have created an affordable, effective, innovative diaper that not only works, but looks great while doing so.
About a month ago I was fortunate enough to be given a GoGreen Champ 2.0 pocket diaper to review. I chose the Moo Champ which has a soft, minky outer cover. This diaper has become one of my favorites in my stash. Some people may be skeptical because of the low price of the Champ in comparison to other similar diapers, but don’t let the price deter you. When the Champ comes to you, this is what you will receive:
Notice the lack of fancy packaging. By reducing fancy packaging that will just end up in the garbage or recycling bin, they are able to pass on the savings to their customers. A high quality diaper means much more to me than high quality packaging.
The inside of the diaper has dual gussets to keep messes in and, my favorite feature, a sleeve style opening so that the inserts agitate out in the wash. There is no need to unstuff this diaper before throwing it in the laundry! You can snap the insert in if you choose to, but I found that it pulled on the front while it was on and I got a better fit without it being snapped. I didn’t have any issues with the insert shifting so I didn’t find that I needed to snap the insert in, but it is an option if you would like.
The Champ is a generously sized diaper, which I like. Their website states that The Champ will fit from newborn to about 45 pounds. Most other One Size diapers claim to fit until about 35 pounds. In this comparison photo both diapers are on the medium rise setting. The diaper on the right is a typically sized One Size diaper. Although The Champ is quite a bit bigger, I am still able to get a great fit on K. The diaper is trim fitting despite its generous sizing and look how cute it looks on the bum.
The GoGreen Champ only comes in a snap option, BUT they offer Adapt-A-Snap. With Adapt-A-Snap you can make your snap diaper into a hook & loop diaper in a snap (no pun intended). This is especially nice if one parent prefers snaps and the other prefers hook & loop. I tried the Adapt-A-Snap quickly for review purposes because K-Dub pulls on his diapers now and is dangerously close to getting hook & loop diapers off. But this is what it looks like with the Adapt-A-Snap on:
It’s very easy to put on and remove. There are male snaps all along a strip of velcro to attach to the female ends of the snaps along the front of the diaper. It is a bit bulky with all of the snaps underneath the velcro, but I still think that it’s a fantastic idea for those who want to use this option.
- Economical without sacrificing quality
- Generous sizing
- No pockets to unstuff before washing
- Very absorbent without being bulky
- Microfiber insert isn’t as scratchy as some other brands
- Fits well under pants and jeans
- A thick front band for a nice flat fit on the belly
- No leaks
The only thing that I didn’t love about this diaper was the Adapt-A-Snap. The snaps made it more bulky than a plain hook & loop diaper and we just don’t use hook & loop very much as a personal preference. However, I think that it’s a fantastic idea and a great option for those families that prefer snaps but have another caregiver that prefers hook & loop.
Overall I really like this diaper. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone, but would especially recommend it to those on a budget. And let’s face it, not many people aren’t on a budget these days? I love The Champ and may have to buy a few more. You can buy the GoGreen Champ at GoGreenDiapers.com for $15.95
