If you were to ask me what childhood favorite I would love to have back on the air, I would have a hard time choosing just one. I am a purist and do not want my old favorites to come back in a new format like The Electric Company has. There is just no substitute for Gene Wilder is Letterman. I loved that show as a kid but it just doesn’t have the same feeling now as it did. It’s too much style without the substance as much of the shows of today are. I miss the days of simpler shows that still hold a place in our hearts 30 years later.
As much as I loved The Electric Company and others, I have to say that the show I would love to have back in the same format but with more current guest stars is The Muppet Show.
I must admit that they’ve done a very good job with The Muppets movie so it gives me hope that the writing could be just as good now as it was then. Heck, K-Dub hums “Smells Like Team Spirit” ala Beaker all the time!
While entertaining the under two crowd, it also keeps my twelve-year-old entertained as well as their nostalgic parents. I have The Muppet Show: Season One DVD set and Red was just as captivated by it the other day as he was when we first got it when he was younger. The Muppet Show had a certain magic that hasn’t been duplicated in the 30+ years that it’s been off the air and I wish someone would take a page from this old book and try to recapture that magic again for today’s kids.
