The typical candles you buy to make your house smell nice are made of paraffin wax, which is a petroleum by-product. Not only is the wax itself petroleum-based but so are the fragrances used to scent them as natural essential oils will be broken down by the wax.
While lighting a candle once in a while is unlikely to pose a health risk, if you’re someone who burns candles frequently then that could be a different story. Paraffin candles give off VOCs (volitile organic compounds) when you light them and the soot is released into the air to land on walls and other surfaces. This could potentially exacerbate symptoms for people with breathing problems such as asthma or lung disease as well as cause headaches. There is also evidence that paraffin could be a carcinogen.
There is an alternative to risking your health for your house to smell like a summer breeze. Soy candles! They burn cleaner, longer, and smell just as good as their sooty counterparts.
I was given some Soy Serenity candles to review in the Cucumber Cantaloupe and Apple Crumble scents. They smell fabulous! No one would ever know that they weren’t typical commercially made scented candles.
Their smell is a little less in-your-face than typical paraffin wax candles and I’m okay with that! I am not typically a fan of overly perfumy scents and I only burned normal candles for about ten or fifteen minutes, but the Soy Serenity candles smell more natural since they contain natural essential oils so I can leave them burning longer.
But don’t take my word for it, try them for yourself! You can win two 7 ounce Soy Serenity candles by entering via the giveaway form below. You can also buy them for yourself on their website. They have many sizes and scents to choose from.
