When you think of the Girl Scouts what comes to mind first? Probably cookies. Who can resist those delicious little Thin Mints and Samoas?
While the cookies are a great, some of my fondest childhood memories were from my time as a Brownie and then a Girl Scout. I always loved the days we had troop meetings after school so I could wear my uniform to school. I was so proud and it gave me the opportunity to bond with other scouts from other troops. Plus, I can’t lie, I always felt kind of cool in my uniform.
When I was a little older I went to Girl Scout camp for two weeks every summer where I met a lot of new friends and learned how to horseback ride. I have so many great memories of those summers. The Daddy Long Legs by the outside sink, searching for gnomes among the mushrooms that we called gnome houses, swimming, arts & crafts, campfire songs, nature walks, and staying up late listening to Van Halen and giggling with my cabin mates. Good times. Am I dating myself here?
But I know, you want to know more about the cookies. I can’t say that I blame you.
February 7-8 has been dedicated National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend. This is a time when we celebrate the bigger picture of selling Girl Scout cookies; not only for the consumer of the delicious cookies but also the skills that the girls learn by selling them. They are learning decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. All skills that the girls will need to know as they get older and go out into the world on their own.
This year National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is at the same time as the Winter Olympics. In my new home state of Colorado the Girl Scouts of Colorado will be teaming up with the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to cheer on Team USA!
If you will be near the Colorado Springs area next weekend you might want to sign up your family and friends to participate in the Short and Sweet Downtown Dash, a 1-mile family fun glow run. The Short and Sweet Downtown Dash is at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. Feel free to dress up as your favorite Girl Scout Cookie, and you could even add gear from your favorite Olympic sport!
Were you a Girl Scout? Which cookie is your favorite? I’m a huge Samoa fan!
