Growing up with a mother from the hippie generation who was also an environmental planner, being conscious of the environment was ingrained in me from the time I was a young child without my even realizing it. To me, it’s second nature to go the more natural route in most areas of my life but for some reason, when it comes to personal care products I have been slow to make the switch. When my second child was born four years ago I started using natural bath products and toothpaste for him but I was still using mainstream hygiene products for myself and my older son. Now my oldest is a teenager it’s time for him to also make the switch.
April is Earth Month and spring is in the air so I did a spring cleaning of sorts in Red’s bathroom. I purged all of the commercial hygiene products from his medicine cabinet and replaced them with a cute basket filled with a variety of natural products for him to use instead.
Making the switch to a greener personal care routine is much easier than you may think. You don’t have to find a specialty store or make a special order online. Tom’s of Maine has a large variety of natural personal hygiene products to choose from that are available locally at many small and large retail stores. While I was at Walmart this past weekend I bought Red some aluminum-free deodorant and several natural toothpastes for him to choose from as well as some toothpaste for his little brother.
While I was at it I also bought him a bar of natural hand soap and an eco-friendly hairbrush. Eliminating questionable ingredients that are ingested or applied topically is an important step to living healthier and I am so happy that he is now well on his way to a completely green bathroom routine.
