I love to read but being a busy mom like many of you, it’s not always easy to find the time. Add working from home on top of it and it’s a wonder that I am able to read at all anymore. Even though I can’t read as often as I would like I have made a pact with myself to always make the time to read before bed, even if it’s just one chapter.
I am a purist and have had a hard time letting go of my physical books. I love the smell, the crackle of the cover of a library book, and browsing bookstores is one of my very favorite pastimes, but I have been starting to find it clumsy to read a thick book in bed with my dim little book light and have been considering giving this e-reader thing another try. When I was chosen to review the new Kobo Glo HD e-reader and write about my experience I couldn’t wait to dive right in.
I am not new to e-readers; I have one with a glass screen that is hard to read in certain situations due the glare. After giving it a valiant effort, I found that I was going back to my paper books and my e-reader either sat in my nightstand drawer or my teenage son uses it. When I heard that the Kobo Glo HD has a black and white paper-like screen I was thrilled. With its adjustable ComfortLight and anti-glare screen, I am now able to read at night with ease.
This e-reader is also so compact. It’s not much larger than my iPhone and it’s smaller than any Stephen King book I’ve ever read, but the 6″ screen is still plenty large enough for me. If needed, the fonts and font sizes can be adjusted to your preference. Another nice thing is that the touchscreen allows you to swipe the screen to turn the page instead of pressing a page button.
The Kobo Glo HD holds about 3,000 ebooks and has a battery life of up to 2 months which makes it perfect for traveling. Save space in your luggage by not having to pack several large books or even a charger!
I can toss my Kobo Glo HD in my purse and read anywhere since it’s so compact and portable. In line at the DMV? Instant boredom buster. Waiting in the school parking lot for the kids to get out? I can read a chapter or two while I wait. WiFi is needed only for downloads, not for reading so I truly can read anywhere! Now I have no more excuses to read more often.
If I forget to put my Kobo e-reader in my purse I can still read on the beautiful Kobo app on my iPhone. The app is also available on Android, Blackberry10 and Windows8 phones and devices.
After a particularly gloomy and rainy two weeks, I was finally able to go out on the back deck yesterday and read while Dub played in the yard. There was absolutely no glare on the screen from the almost-forgotten sunshine.
Now I’m not saying that I’m going to give up my paper books entirely, but I am definitely now a convert. I love the convenience of the Kobo Glo HD and find that I read much faster on an e-reader since it tells me my progress as I go. It is now a very welcome addition to my ever-growing library of paper and now electronic books.
