When was the last time you went on a date with your spouse or partner? I can tell you that for me, it’s been far too long. I have all of the excuses in the book – not enough time, I’m tired, I don’t feel like getting dressed up, I don’t have a good sitter, and so on. Does this sound familiar?
The truth is, date nights are very important for a healthy relationship. I keep reading more and more about the importance of dating your spouse, and I completely agree. It has made me reflect more on my own marriage and how I am going to make dating my husband again a priority.
It doesn’t matter if you are married or not. It also doesn’t matter whether you have kids or not. Dating your partner is important for so many reasons.
Keeping the relationship fresh
Like bread, relationships can get stale. It doesn’t matter how good it is; if you forget about it and let it sit for too long it will go bad. Relationships are a constant work in progress with high times and low times, but regular dates are important for reconnecting on a regular basis.
A date night with the one you love is the perfect prescription for stress relief. A crazy project at work, a hard day with the kids, or a broken hot water heater at home creates stress. Instead of letting stress fester, take a few hours to have dinner and a drink or two with your partner.
Even the most perfect of couples have things they need to talk about. When the kids are around you are less likely to air your grievances or talk about things that need to be done. Communication breakdown is a huge problem in relationships so it’s important for you and your partner to talk it out once in a while.
Time away from the kids
We all love our kids more than anything and love spending time with them, but you need to get away once in a while. We all do. Many parents don’t give themselves permission to leave their child(ren) behind, but it is important for your relationship to do so. There are many wonderful resources for finding a quality sitter in your area, like the Sitter app, so you can enjoy a night out with your partner. After all, when the kids are grown you don’t want your spouse to be a stranger.
Try something new
If you go on regular date nights you can try that great new Italian restaurant you pass on your way home from work or see that movie that everyone is talking about instead of waiting for that movie to come out on DVD. You deserve to try new things, so go out and do it.
Maintain your appearance
When was the last time you got a great new haircut, bought a new dress just because, or tried a new shade of lipstick? I know that for me, it’s been far too long. If I am going out on the town on a regular basis I am less likely to let things start to fall by the wayside.
If you are also interested in making date nights a priority in your relationship, check out the Sitter app to find a great sitter for the kids. It’s easy, it’s free, it’s fast, and it’s right there on your phone at all times so, best of all, it’s convenient.
