I’ve always been a sucker for nostalgia. I find myself buying my kids the toys and books that I loved as a child as well as introducing them to the movies and TV shows I loved (and still do). Another way that I share a piece of my childhood with my kids is with food. For me, food has a way of taking me back in time like nothing else.
One of those snacks is Goldfish crackers. Is there a more quintessentially nostalgic snack? Goldfish are a staple in our house and are almost always the first snack Dub asks for when he gets home from school. Baked with 100% real cheese and without artificial flavors, dyes, or preservatives, it’s a snack that I also feel good about having in the pantry.
When he comes home he fills his Goldfish container with crackers and heads outside to play with the neighbor kids. This is just the way childhood should be and I love that he prefers playing outside with his friends to watching TV or playing on the iPad. As a mom, this is what puts a big smile on my face.
While Goldfish crackers are a fun snack, they are also a fun learning tool. You may think I’ve lost my mind with that statement, but it’s true and I’ll tell you how.
Kindergarten math with Goldfish crackers
Dub started Kindergarten this year and he is so excited! He loves to learn and even loves doing his homework. I will have to remind him of this in a couple of years when he no longer thinks school is all that cool.
One thing that he talks about a lot when he comes home from school is his math lessons. Both of my kids love math and I honestly have no idea where they got this from. Not from me, that’s for sure! Since his homework is almost exclusively practicing sight words, we started practicing with our own math games. One of his favorite math games is practicing his addition and subtraction with Goldfish crackers.
To create our math practice game, I took a simple piece of poster board and drew a box along with addition, subtraction, and equals signs. By leaving it blank we can practice with any numbers we want or need to for that day. On this day, we were working with threes. He loves using Goldfish crackers because when he is finished adding and subtracting, he has a built-in snack!
This is how we have fun with Goldfish crackers, but they would also like to know how Goldfish make you smile!
