As a work at home mom, I don’t have a lot of time for myself. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t change a thing, but after leaving my corporate job I was surprised to find that I had less “me time”, not more. Now I no longer have a commute where I can spend a half hour alone or a designated lunch break to take a walk or read a book.
Working at home means that I have to carve out my own me time and I have to be honest, I don’t always do that. But I have to. In order for me to be more productive and less stressed, I need to be sure to carve out some time for myself so I can recharge.
Since becoming a mom 17 years ago I have often put my children first. If not my children, then my husband, my job, errands, everything but myself. After doing that for so many years, it’s starting to take a toll. It’s time for me to put myself first so I make it a priority to give myself some me time every single day. It’s not always easy, but even when I’m not alone, I make the time to be alone. Yes. You read that right. Because sometimes, as parents, it’s the only time we have.
Take a hike
This may sound weird, but even when I am with my family, I manage to make time for me time. Living in Colorado gives us access to some pretty amazing places where even when you’re with others, you can also be alone. On a recent hike at Garden of the Gods, my husband was off with the kids looking at birds and rocks while I went off by myself. I sat on a rock and took in this amazing view, feeling so small in this giant open space. There really is nothing like it.
Gardening and plant maintenance is also a great time for some me time. Planting, watering, and pruning are always a great excuse to get outside and hang with yourself.
Reading is my forever go-to activity when I want to tune out the world and escape reality for a little while. It’s hard to find time to read between work and kids, but it’s important to me to make the time. Even if it’s just a chapter before bed, I read every single day.
Yes. Seriously. Even while on vacation with my entire family, including extended family, I am able to carve out some me time. We went for a trip back home to New England last week and while sitting on the deck in a chair soaking in the amazing salt air, I took some time for myself. My teenager was reading in a hammock (he needs his alone time, too) and my six-year-old was hanging on the beach with his grandmother. It’s the perfect time for a few minutes alone.
Time alone with a treat is even better because sometimes you just have to treat yo’self. You’re worth it.
