Forty. 40. FOUR-OH. However you choose to spell it, it’s a shock to the system to finally say, “I’m in my forties”. I thought turning 30 was bad, but now I laugh at my 30-year-old self. I know that once I cross the 50 mark I’ll once again laugh, but I’m still not done processing that I’m in my 40s yet!
Now that I am in my forties, it is more important than ever to make sure that I look younger and more importantly, feel younger. The fastest way to age yourself is to think older so in order to keep thinking like the 25-year-old I feel like I am, I need to feel like one.
1. Eat smaller, more frequent meals
Starting the day off with breakfast helps keep you from binging on less healthy foods later in the day. I always start my morning with a quick, healthy breakfast. Overnight oats is a new favorite of mine, but any healthy breakfast will do. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains throughout the day instead of empty calories.
2. Drink water
We all know that we need to drink more water. It is especially important when you’re over 40 because well-hydrated skin is healthy skin. It also means fewer crow’s feet and fine lines. Increasing your water intake can also help with red spots and blotchiness in the skin which will also help you look younger.
3. Decrease stress
Not only is stress, well, stressful, it will also age you pretty quickly. Frown lines around your mouth and worry lines on your forehead will settle in and you don’t want that. Meditate, do yoga, spend time with friends. Whatever helps you de-stress, do it.
4. Get plenty of sleep
Easier said than done. Trust me, I know. Especially for busy moms who are up with the kids or getting some much-needed alone time after everyone goes to bed. Sleep is something that I have struggled with for many years, but I am now making a conscious effort to get to sleep at a more reasonable hour. It’s not easy, but I always feel and look so much better when I do.
Again, easier said than done sometimes. I am always jealous of those people who love to exercise and are willing to get up before the sun to do it. That’s not me. Not even close! I have to really make an effort to exercise and truth be told, it’s something that I have done far too little of in recent years.
Now that my youngest is in Kindergarten, I have made it a priority to at least go for a walk while he’s at school. When the weather cools down I will also walk him to school a few times a week. One other thing I have done recently is start a Beginner’s 8-Week Walk-Run Schedule.
Too much time in the sun is not only a skin cancer risk, but it can also cause fine lines, wrinkles, and leathery skin. We often remember to wear it when we will be outside for extended periods, but wearing it on your face daily is important. I like to use moisturizers and foundations with SPF 15 as well as a sunscreen made specifically for the face.
7. Moisturize and exfoliate
Exfoliating away dead skin cells and renewing the younger skin below is key. Follow up with a good quality moisturizer and wrinkle reducer to keep your skin looking young and healthy longer.
8. Love and intimacy
Connecting with your spouse or partner is an important part of feeling younger. Happier people have a glow that makes them look and feel younger than their years. Intimacy has also been shown to make you look younger. So go ahead, rekindle your relationship and date your partner again. Have fun, be intimate, and love the people around you more purposefully. Your face and body will thank you.
9. Take supplements
40 seems to be the magic number when it’s time to really taking care of yourself. You need to see the doctor more frequently for screenings and check-ups that you didn’t need before.
To help stay healthy, probiotics, fish oil, a good multi-vitamin, and supplements for overall health and well-being. As we approach and pass 40, this is a welcome boost!
