High School?! How Did This Happen?!

My first baby started high school two weeks ago. Yes, high school!

I admit that I was (and am) more nervous than he was about the beginning of high school. You may remember that Red has ADHD and while he manages it pretty well in school, the beginning of the school year is usually an adjustment. I don’t expect him to get as much assistance in high school and will be expected to be even more independent. Thankfully last year was a very good year for him despite a rough beginning so I think that he is up for the challenge.

Not only does he have ADHD but he is the youngest kid in his class which means that he is likely the youngest kid in the high school. When he started school the cut off was December 31st and here it is October 1st. He has an early December birthday so he was always on the young side, but now he is very young compared to his peers. That with the ADHD makes him a little more immature than a lot of the other kids which sometimes brings on its own set of problems.

But I am happy to report that the first two weeks have been great so far! Not a single call or email from a teacher (this is a first), he got a “job” as an assistant in the library during his free period, and he has managed his lunch money. He was given a $20 bill and told to manage it on his own. Not only hasn’t he lost it (which was the biggest concern) but he has stayed within a reasonable budget instead of blowing it on a bunch of extras. Yay impulse control!

He is also handling his honors classes really well, including English. Last year we decided to put him in an honors math class since he has always been great at math as well as an honors English class. I had some reservations about that because he has always hated to write and has always needed extra prompting to complete written assignments. He reads all the time and at a higher grade level but with his dislike of writing he has had a hard time proving that he’s a good reader. He handled the honors class with flying colors last year, even the writing, and I hope that he has finally turned that corner for good.

I am encouraged by the first two weeks and am looking forward to an excellent school year!

glad it started out good… a good start is important! I can’t imagine my babies going to high school. No matter how old they are they will always be our babies 🙂

The time goes by so fast. My step daughter was just under 3 when I met my husband and is 10 now, not too long and she will be in high school, but it seems like I just met him yesterday and she was so little

I hear that, Karine. My oldest had just turned 6 when my husband and I met. It’s crazy to think that he has been in his life longer than he wasn’t at this point. And it seems like just yesterday that my son was little and it was just he and I doing our thing <3 I'll be sending the little one off to high school before I know it.

My little one will be 3 in November and I can’t imagine sending him off to Kindergarten much less high school, but it’ll be here before I know it.

We’re just starting our school journey. Today was my oldest’s first day of preschool. Sounds like your guy is coming into his own. Way to go!

That’s fantastic! (And also sounds very familiar…. my oldest is one of the youngest in his class due to cutoffs with ADHD, and has been in honours courses.) Here’s hoping that both of our boys have a successful year and whiz through their honours and AP courses!

Best of luck to your son this year, too. It can be a hard road but it’s so rewarding when it finally clicks
