It took me a long time to try hummus. As a child my mother used to put chickpeas in things and I couldn’t stand them so when I found out that hummus was mostly chickpeas, there was no way.
I don’t remember the day that I finally decided to try it but it was within the past five years or less. But when I did try it, it was like a party in my mouth. I lamented the fact that hummus and I had missed so many years together but I was going to make up for it now. I tried the store-bought containers and it’s fine, I’ll eat it without complaint, but I finally tried making my own about a year ago and with something this simple there is no reason not to make it at home.
Gather your ingredients. For this recipe you will need chickpeas (garbanzo beans), a jar of roasted red peppers, sesame tahini paste, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, salt, and pepper.
Put all of your ingredients in a food processor and reserve some of the garbanzo bean liquid in case you want to adjust your consistency. You could also use a blender.
Use your chopper blade and go to town until your ingredients are completely combined and a hummusy texture. Give it a little taste and adjust your seasonings to your taste.
Slap that yummy stuff on a plate (or just grab a spoon) and eat it with whatever you want. Veggies, crackers, pita chips, whatever makes you happy. I served this to my mother who has made hummus for years and got high praise and we all snarfed it down on Thanksgiving afternoon. Mmm.
Now I am on NutriSystem and I have a batch sitting in my fridge to use for my veggies as my SmartCarb serving.
- 1 15 oz can garbanzo beans
- 1 large roasted red pepper
- 1/4 cup sesame tahini paste
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 2-3 garlic cloves, depending on size and your taste, crushed
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1. Drain beans and reserve liquid
- 2. Add all of your ingredients to a food processor or blender (except for garbanzo bean juice)
- 3. Process until the mixture is smooth.
- 4. Add liquid (if needed) until the desired consistency is reached.
- 5. Adjust seasonings to your taste
