Book review: Somebody I Used to Know by David Bell

About the book:

Somebody I Used to Know is the story of Nick Hansen who has never gotten over Marissa, his one true love. Marissa died in a tragic house fire twenty years earlier while in college and despite his attempts to move on, he is always haunted by her memory.

While shopping at the grocery store he sees a young woman who is the spitting image of Marissa. Nick tries to speak to her to see if she may be related in some way to his former girlfriend, but she becomes skittish and runs off. This causes Nick to wonder about her even more. Who was she? Why did she run?

The next morning Nick finds that the girl from the grocery store was murdered in a hotel room when the police arrive at his house to question him about the murder. The police are wondering why they found his name and address on a piece of paper in her pocket. Now he is sure that there is a connection so he convinces his friend Laurel to help him find out what really happened the night of Marissa’s death. What Nick and Laurel begin to uncover leaves more questions than answers.

As the investigation into Marissa’s death begins to unfold there are questions as to who this girl from the grocery store really is, who murdered her, what happened in the days and weeks leading up to the fire, was it arson or an accident, and who is following Nick?

My thoughts:

I am a suspense and thriller fan so books that surprise me are my favorite kind and this one didn’t disappoint. As with any good whodunit, Somebody I Used to Know kept me guessing until the end. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I found out that I really didn’t.

Before reading this book I was unfamiliar with David Bell’s work, but I will definitely be reading more of his books in the future. If you like the suspense and mystery genre then I definitely recommend Somebody I Used to Know

Available in paperback as well as Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and Audible.
