The times, they are a-changing. Our days of being bound by the television network’s schedule or the cable company’s channel lineup are over and now we have choices like never before.
With streaming services putting out exclusive, quality programs and more people are ditching cable, binge-watching TV shows has become more popular than ever.
But which shows are out there? Which ones are worth binging on?
A few years ago I wrote about my favorite binge-worthy tv shows, but now that we’ve gotten on the bandwagon and ditched our cable, we have been binging more than we used to.
These are the shows I am watching right now.
TV SHOWS WE ARE BINGE-WATCHING IN 2019
Some of my recommendations are old favorites that I’m just now getting into while some are new shows that I love. Also included are some newer shows that I highly recommend you binge watch to catch up on if you’re not watching already.
The Great British Baking Show
The Great British Baking Show, or The Great British Bake Off as it’s known in the UK, is more than your run-of-the-mill Baking competition. Sure, there is a host (or two), judges, and contestants, but there is also humor. TGBBS is legitimately laugh out loud funny. Plus it will make you want to make a Victoria Sandwich.
Where to watch: Netflix, PBS
Queer Eye
A reboot of the early 2000s show of the same name that doesn’t feel like a reboot. Yes, there is a new Fab Five who perform makeovers of body, mind, wardrobe, kitchen, and home, but it feels fresher than typical reboots. The new version of Queer Eye will get you right in the feels every single time.
Where to watch: Netflix
Big Bang Theory
While Big Bang Theory is now in its twelfth and final season, it’s a legitimately funny show about a group of nerdy scientist friends. Never short on Star Wars and Star Trek references, BBT is always good for a laugh. Unfortunately, CBS doesn’t always play nice with streaming services so Big Bang Theory isn’t available on Netflix or Hulu, but you can watch on CBS All Access and Fubo.
Where to watch: CBS All Access, Fubo
Nailed It!
Three (very) amateur bakers attempt to reproduce a professionally decorated dessert with hilarious results. If you love cake, cookies, and laughter then you will love Nailed It!
Where to watch: Netflix
The Haunting of Hill House
If you like having the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, The Haunting of Hill House will do just that. A family purchases a big old house to fix up and resell, but the house has other plans. This is a haunted house story that affects the lives of the family who purchased it long after they’ve moved away.
If you’ve read the book, don’t expect to see the same story. This limited series is inspired by the Shirley Jackson book of the same name but doesn’t follow it all that closely.
Where to watch: Netflix
The Goldbergs
The Goldbergs brings back so many fond and funny memories for those of us who grew up in the 1980s. Not only is it fun to watch for nostalgic reasons, it’s legitimately funny.
Where to watch: Hulu
This Is Us
Who isn’t watching This Is Us by now? If you’re not, you should be. It’s rare that a show pulls at my heartstrings, but this one does it week after week. Going back and forth from present day to multiple different times in the family’s past, you get to know the Pearsons almost as well as you know your own family.
Where to watch: Hulu
American Horror Story
The eighth season of AHS recently wrapped up and the pieces are slowly starting to finally come together. This series is unique in that each season is different from the others. The topics and characters are different, though many of the actors remain the same. In the beginning, each season may seem completely random, but after a few seasons, the similarities between them become apparent.
Where to watch: Netflix
A Million Little Things
This is a new show this season so if you haven’t started watching yet, you don’t have a lot to catch up on. But I highly suggest you do. It has drawn comparisons to This Is Us, but instead of a family drama, it is a friend drama. Instead of being similar to This Is Us, it should be said that if you like one show, you will probably like the other. Well written, and well acted, A Million Little Things is a must-watch.
Where to watch: Hulu
Killing Eve
Darker than the rest of the shows on this list, Killing Eve may not be for everyone. Eve is a spy tasked with hunting down Villanelle, a highly skilled assassin while each woman becomes equally obsessed with the other.
Where to watch: Hulu, BBC America
