When you think of fall, what comes to mind? I know that I immediately think of all things apple. Apple picking, apple cider, apple pie, you name it. The smell of baking apples brings me right back to my New England childhood and is so comforting to me.
When I found myself with some Pillsbury Crescent Rolls in the fridge and some apples on the counter, I had to put them together in some way. What I came up with was apple pie “fries” and they were so good!
The word fries only refers to their shape. They are not fried; instead, they are baked in the oven until golden brown. But you can’t have fries without something to dip them in, so I served them with a delicious, creamy caramel sauce. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
This is such a fast, easy dessert for a fall evening when you don’t have the time to make an apple pie and your sweet tooth is calling. As long as you have a few simple ingredients, you can put this together at the last minute. What could be better than that? When it comes to cooking, I love easy the best!
All you need for these apple pie fries is apples, apple pie spice (or cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove), sugar, brown sugar, Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, butter, and cinnamon sugar. For the caramel sauce, you will need caramel candies and a few tablespoons of milk. See? Nice and easy.
APPLE PIE FRIES
For the filling, cut three cups of your favorite apples into very small cubes. I used Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. Toss the apples together with flour, apple pie spice, and sugar then let them sit for about a half-hour.
Since the crescent rolls are shaped like a triangle, in order to get the rectangular shape you are looking for, keep two of them connected together. Pinch the perforated part to make a solid rectangle and add the filling down the center of the dough the long way. Roll the sides over the apple filling and pinch the ends. To make the “fries” a more golden brown, brush melted butter or an egg wash on top and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.
*For a smaller “fry”, cut the rectangle in half to form two squares.
The caramel sauce couldn’t be easier! Heat a pan over medium heat, then add a half cup of caramel candies. I like to use caramel bits because they melt faster. Once they begin to melt, add one to two tablespoons of milk, one tablespoon at a time.
When the sauce is to your desired consistency, pour in a bowl and serve warm with the apple pie “fries”. Dip a fry in and devour!
Really, this dessert couldn’t be easier and is a sure crowd-pleaser. This is also a great dessert for the holidays. Since it is so fast and easy, you will spend more time with family and less time in the kitchen. After all, isn’t that what the holidays are all about?
What is your favorite way to use Pillsbury Crescent Rolls?
- 3 cups of your favorite kind of apples, I used 1 Golden Delicious, 1/2 Granny Smith, and Honeycrisp for the remainder
- 1/2 tsp apple pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove
- 1/2 tbsp flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2- Pack Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
- Melted butter & cinnamon sugar
- Caramel candies
- 1-2 tbsp milk
- Cut apples into small cubes
- Toss apple pie spice, flour, and sugar in with the apples and let them sit for about a half hour
- Keep two Pillsbury Crescent Rolls together to form a rectangle, pinch the perforated part together for s solid piece of dough.
- Fill with apple filling down the center of the dough
- roll the sides of the dough around the apples and pinch both ends
- Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar
- Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 12 minutes or until golden brown
- Melt caramel candies over medium heat. Add milk one tablespoon at a time to melting candies until caramel sauce is to desired consistency.
- Serve warm with apple pie fries.
