A few ideas of what to put in cream of wheat to up the flavor are cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar (or Splenda, stevia, etc), maple syrup, and honey. To that, add some fresh, frozen, or dried fruit while it’s cooking. I also like to add vanilla to every batch and have also played with other extracts like lemon and almond.

I eat a lot of cream of wheat because I’m on a full liquid diet following surgery.
My favorite stir-ins for sweet include cream and butter, and brown sugar.
I’m much more of a fan of savory, and that’s where I go wild. Tonight, I caramelized an onion; cooked the cream of wheat in beef broth, butter, a dash of red wine and Worcestershire sauce, and thyme, salt, and pepper, then added the onions, pureed it, and stirred in shredded parm and shredded provolone, for a hearty french onion soup vibe. Last night, dinner was cream of wheat cooked in chicken stock with a dash of cream, lots of shredded cheddar, S&P, onion powder, garlic powder, a little cajun seasoning and a small jar of green pea baby food, with salad shrimp, pureed. BOOM! SHRIMP AND CHEESE GRITS!
I never realized I could use cream of wheat as a way to cook anything other than the cream of wheat my Poppaw ate when I was a kid, but I have a feeling that it’ll be a pantry staple from now on for an easy and filling meal….. but I’ll probably drop all the pureeing and baby food add-ins. Lol
That sounds delicious. I haven’t attempted to make savory cream of wheat, but now I think I’m inspired to try it.
