Tommee Tippee Ultra Bottle Review

Switching from breast to bottle often isn’t easy for babies but is necessary when the mother needs to return to work (or in my case, school). There are numerous bottles on the market that claim to be the best for babies. Some say that their nipples make for easy transitions, others are best for babies with colic.

I have never used a Tommee Tippee bottle prior to this experience and, honestly, it is mostly my husband who bottle-feeds. After all, I have the direct source for Little. Therefore, this review is a mix between my personal experience with the Ultra bottle and my husband’s thoughts on how our daughter did with it.

This bottle is touted for its breast-like latch and smooth flow. While I am not a baby and therefore couldn’t tell you directly whether or not these claims are true. I can say that my newborn is not particularly fond of this bottle – as far as I can tell.

Our first time giving Little the bottle, she was not having it at all. No amount of adjusting would make her happy. I will not say that this was solely due to the Ultra bottle, but rather that she had never had a bottle before and it was strange and new. However, because of its claim to switch easily from breast to bottle, I had hoped for a better reaction.

(That is the look of ultimate betrayal.)

Due to the contour and secure seal, Tommee Tippee Ultra asserts that it will reduce air intake as well as dribbles. This may be due to its slow flow. I will say that Little is a messy eater and she is the queen of air-swallowing (resulting in a happy spitter of a baby). Again, I hoped that the bottle would help with this and was disappointed in the amount of milk lost through dribbling and spit-ups.

Of course, every baby is different and she may be the outlier! She has a strong suck, so it’s quite possible that she is merely drawing too much milk in at one time, causing her to choke and lose some of that liquid gold to the feeding gods.

Additionally, my prima donna of a husband is not a fan of the nipple but I can agree with his reasons. Because it is off-set, it makes for adjusting the top difficult. Babies don’t always sit perfectly still while eating and it causes the bottle to rotate a bit with their latch. Because of the air hole in the top, the offset nipple must be removed and turned to make Little happy again.

However, I will say that there are some aspects of this bottle that I enjoy. First, this bottle is huge and will hold a ton of milk. Although a newborn doesn’t need all 9 ounces that it will hold, she will at some point and I will be thrilled to have this bottle on hand for when that time comes. Second, the contour of the bottle is helpful in holding the bottle and adjusting its angle for the best possible flow. If I had given the Ultra to my first daughter, Tink, I would have had none of these problems. She loved her milk in any way that she could get it and never had an issue switching from breast to bottle.

While this bottle hasn’t worked for us yet, I anticipate using it more in the future as she gets used to bottles. I will continue to rotate it through our selection and plan to update this post in a few weeks.

I encourage you to check out the Tommee Tippee Ultra bottle for yourself by purchasing one from Amazon or Toys R Us. Let me know about your experience with the bottle (or their other products) in the comments!
