My oldest son is fifteen and has been responsible for a regular set of chores for quite a few years now. He knows what is expected of him, but having ADHD means that he needs frequent, often daily reminders to get them done. Now that he’s about to finish up his sophomore year of high school it is time to get him ready for the realities of being able to keep his tasks organized so he will be ready for the real world of college and beyond. This, coupled with his four-year-old brother beginning to get regular chores and tasks of his own made me realize that visual aids for both kids would help a great deal. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long, but I decided that chore charts were the way to go.

We don’t pay an allowance for standard chores, but if Red goes above and beyond then he is allowed to earn some money for his effort. In addition to his regular chore chart, we made him an odd jobs bucket with a chore, a level of difficulty, and a dollar amount. When he finishes an extra job he pulls the stick out and sets it aside to turn in at the end of the week for payment.

One of Red’s chores is to vacuum the front room and living room on the main level of the house and his bedroom so he was the first one to try out our new vacuum. We have two cats, but the amount that they shed is nothing compared to the amount that I shed. I have always been one of those people whose hair seems to fall out at a record pace. While my old vacuum doesn’t have a brushroll, my hair winds tightly around the wheels. Once enough hair gets wound around them, of course, the vacuum no longer rolls. Let me tell you, cutting the hair and fuzz away from this little piece is a nightmare! When I heard about the Eureka Brushroll Clean™ with SuctionSeal® vacuum I was excited to give it a try!

The self-cleaning brushroll feature on the Eureka Brushroll Clean™ with SuctionSeal® is a game changer! This is a brand new product available nationwide at Walmart and it’s the only vacuum on the market with a self-cleaning brushroll. After one pass through the main floor of the house look at how much hair is wound around the brushroll. I was a little skeptical about it being able to clean out all of my hair but with the press of a button and just ten seconds the brushroll is clean again. No kidding! I was amazed and am absolutely in love with this vacuum. Not only can I stop giving my vacuum and haircut, this vacuum sucks up everything in its path and it is guaranteed not to lose suction over time.

Now that Dub is four it is also time for him to have his own responsibility chart. His chart was a lot of fun to make. I wanted something simple for him follow but fun at the same time. To accomplish this, I bought a magnetic board, some wooden stars, superhero stickers, tissue paper, magnetic strips, Mod Podge, and I created a Superhero chart in Pic Monkey.

To create the chart, I ripped the tissue paper in random shapes and glued them to the magnetic board. Once the board was covered I spread Mod Podge over the top with a foam brush, applying a second coat when the first coat was dry. Next came the chore chart. I applied the printed chart before the second coat of Mod Podge was dry then covered it was its own coat. I did the same with the wooden stars, applied stickers, a second coat of Mod Podge, then stuck the magnets to the back.

Now Dub wants to do chores so he can stick a new star on his chart. He has been very excited to get his tasks done every day and it’s even (finally) gotten him to pick up his toys from the living room at the end of the day.

In addition to his chart of regular responsibilities, Dub also has a behavior chart. If he listens and doesn’t have a tantrum for the day then he gets to put a star in his behavior bucket. At the end of the week, he will get a small reward if his bucket is full.
