I haven’t had as much mother/son time with Red as I’d like because finding in-between activities is challenging. Also, when you’re 17 it’s not all that cool to hang out with mom anymore. But I did it! I found the perfect thing for us to do. Last week my teenager and I had one of the coolest mother and son dates ever. We went out for a paint night!
I come from a family of artists, but that gene skipped me completely. Even so, I’ve seen some of my friends share their paint night experiences in my Facebook feed and thought it looked like a lot of fun. When I had the opportunity to check out our local Painting with a Twist in Lakewood, Colorado, I knew that it would be the perfect date night for Red and me.
Is his shirt not the best?! Yes, he wore his Bob Ross shirt for the occasion and it was a huge hit with everyone there. He’s a funny kid.
About Painting with a Twist
We arrived at their downtown Lakewood location and I was immediately impressed. Painting with a Twist is set up like a funky little art studio with fun paintings and details throughout. I also love that the rules are so simple. Basically, don’t take yourself too seriously. Even before beginning our painting, our instructor reminded us that it is fun art, not fine art.
When you book your appointment online they have a list of the dates and times along with the painting that will be painted that night. For our class, we chose either spring or fall trees.
The paintings are meant for all skill levels that can be completed in two hours. However, if you don’t finish or really don’t like your painting, they have free SOS classes so you can tweak your painting. This is a great option if you need it.
I loved our paint night experience and can’t wait to do it again! The instructors were great and engaging and I could tell that Red was really having a great time. When the class was over, he was already talking about going back.
Whether you are looking for ideas for a date night with teens or a night out with friends, Painting with a Twist is so much fun! They have locations all across the country so there is probably one near you.
I love these painting places. I went to one for a friend’s bachelorette party and it was a lot of fun!
i want to do one of these painting events so badly. looks like so much fun. the happy trees is hysterical. I love it.
amazing moment and idea for some family bonding if you ask me, paintings brings into life pictures of the mind and its such a good way to get kids closer to yourself.
Woo interesting !! I wish we had something like this is Ireland !! Its a good way of promoting painting skills
I I think this looks like so much fun, a great activity to do with an older child/teenager.
This activity sounds interesting, I think it can really make people get closer. Yeah, there’s not so many occasions for parents and their kids, especially teenagers, to gather around and have memorable moments. This is such a great place, I would try this out with my mom. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve been wanting to try this activity out for a while. I think I am going to drag my husband to this though.
I have always wanted to do one of these paint nights. They look like they would be so much fun!
This does look like such a lot of fun. I did another paint night thing in Orange County one time. It was a lot of fun. It’s always great to do something like this.
I really like the idea Painting with a Twist. It’s fun and help to boost the creativity of children. I’ll try it with my kids someday.
That sounds really fun, I love painting as well and this is the best way to spend a day in summer
This looks like it would be a fabulous time. I do believe I will be checking out if they have something like this in my area. My son and I haven’t done a mother/son date night in a while.
His shirt looks cute on him and fun art can really be interesting you know. You guys sure had a great time.
I already love making crafts with my little kiddos. A painting date night sounds like a great experience to have with an older tween or teen. I hope Painting with a Twist is still around when my kiddos are older!
Thank you for the tips. I still have quite a few years untill my kidd is a teenager, but maybe I can apply some of this with my girl . 🙂
Wonderful! If I were a teen, I would enjoy a date night with my mum like that too! Maybe it’s cos I love to draw 🙂
This sounds like a really cool idea, and a great way to bond with your son! (And yes, his Tshirt rocks – great choice – I remember watching Bob Ross on PBS when I was little…)
Painting is one way i find fun as a hobby to share with my teenage daughter as she loves painting a lot. I sure love the perception that painting is fun art rather than fine art. Thanks
That’s a cool thing to do! I had never thought about it! I wish I was the kind of person who can paint coz I’d would attend such a workshop with no hesitation
